Delhi Government Decides to Provide Free Meals to Night Shelter Dwellers
In a significant move directed by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, the Delhi government has decided to offer three free meals a day to all occupants of the city’s night shelters. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) held a crucial board meeting on Friday, where major decisions were made for the welfare of the public. According to the decision, a new organization will be invited to bid to provide three daily meals to all night shelter occupants.
Meeting Details and Decisions
The meeting, attended by Delhi’s Urban Development Minister and Vice Chairman of DUSIB, Saurabh Bharadwaj, and officials from other departments, approved the agenda for the long-pending tender for the organization responsible for slum cluster toilet maintenance. The officials informed the Chief Minister that a new agency would soon be invited to maintain restrooms in every JJ cluster. Many Delhi ‘jhuggis’ lack accessible restrooms, and porta cabin restrooms are the only options. Agencies have been involved, and tenders have been released for restroom maintenance.
Addressing Corruption Concerns
The board discussed corruption allegations against several former DUSIB officials, emphasizing the firm opposition to dishonest officers. Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has instructed the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) to investigate cases where officials hold assets disproportionate to their income. Investigations have been ordered for both serving and retired officials in such cases.
Winter Action Plan and Sports Development
The board accepted the bidding for the purchase of 250 pagoda tents, a part of Delhi’s Winter Action Plan. Additionally, the proposal to donate land for the development of Sultanpur Majra’s little stadium, focused on SC/ST development, has been approved. This initiative aims to provide top-notch sports training to children from scheduled castes and tribes.
CM’s Commitment to Welfare
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in charge of DUSIB, has consistently emphasized the commitment to supporting Delhi’s homeless population through the operation of 197 shelter homes. The shelters, managed 24/7 by Shelter Management Agencies, serve as critical refuges for people throughout the year. The budget approval of Rs 72.32 crores for Shelter Homes’ management and operation in August 2022 highlights the Kejriwal government’s dedication to aiding those in need.
