Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Announces Free Bus Travel for Transgender Community
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has revealed a new initiative to provide free bus travel for the transgender community in the national capital. In a post on ‘X,’ CM Kejriwal highlighted the scheme’s objective of granting equal rights and dignity to the transgender population, often subjected to neglect and discrimination. The proposal is expected to be approved by the cabinet soon, with implementation anticipated within a few weeks.
A Step Towards Equality and Inclusivity
Addressing the longstanding societal neglect of the transgender community, CM Kejriwal emphasized the shared humanity and equal rights of all individuals. By extending free bus travel, the Delhi government aims to facilitate improved access to public transportation, thereby enhancing the lives of transgender individuals.
Cabinet Approval and Implementation Timeline
The proposed scheme is currently awaiting cabinet approval, and once endorsed, it is set to be implemented swiftly. CM Kejriwal expressed optimism about the positive impact of this decision on the lives of transgender people, fostering inclusivity and addressing social disparities.
Building on the Success of Existing Initiatives
This initiative builds on the success of the existing free bus ride scheme for women in Delhi. Launched earlier, the scheme enables women to travel for free on Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and cluster buses operated by the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System Limited (DIMTS). The government’s commitment to providing safe and affordable public transport aligns with its broader agenda of promoting inclusivity and gender equality in the city.
