Congress Faces Major Challenges in Punjab Exposed by Navjot Sidhu’s Rallies, AAP Not the Primary Obstacle

Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu’s recent rallies and the subsequent sharp response from the Punjab Congress have brought to the forefront the internal conflicts within the party, posing a significant challenge as the Lok Sabha polls loom. The ongoing indiscipline and public disagreements among party leaders are overshadowing the potential threats from political rivals AAP and BJP.

    Sidhu’s Defiance and Party’s Warning

Mr. Sidhu’s unauthorized rallies across Punjab have drawn criticism from the state party unit, with Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring issuing a stern warning against indiscipline, emphasizing that no one is above the party. The Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa also took a swipe at Sidhu, questioning his motives and urging him to join party protests instead of setting up his own stage.

    Sidhu’s Unwavering Stance

Despite the backlash, Sidhu remains undeterred, emphasizing the gathering of thousands at his rallies and reiterating his commitment to fighting for change in Punjab. His targeting of both the Narendra Modi government at the Centre and the Bhagwant Mann dispensation in Punjab has fueled speculation about a potential return to the BJP.

    Congress-to-BJP Switchovers and Organizational Weakness

The potential shift of Sidhu to the BJP would be in line with a trend seen in recent years, where prominent Congress leaders, including former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh and state Congress chief Sunil Jakhar, have joined the BJP. These defections highlight a weakening of Congress’s organizational strength, evident in its defeat in the 2022 polls. As the party gears up for the Lok Sabha polls, it faces the challenge of internal cohesion.

Trouble Extends Beyond Punjab: Haryana and Himachal Pradesh

The Congress’s internal strife is not confined to Punjab, as Haryana and Himachal Pradesh also grapple with power struggles. In Haryana, the public power tussle between Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the SRK group (Selja, Surjewala, and Chaudhary) has created a rift, prompting the BJP to taunt the lack of unity within the Congress.

In Himachal Pradesh, state minister Vikramaditya Singh’s public criticism of the party’s government over the budget has added to the turmoil. His mother, state Congress chief Pratibha Singh, congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Ram Temple consecration, defying the party’s stand to stay away from the event.
