Congress Announces Second List of Candidates for Madhya Pradesh Assembly Polls

The Congress party revealed its second list of candidates for the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly polls, finalizing all but one nominee for the 230-member assembly set for November 17. This list included 85 candidates, with the Congress making notable replacements in three constituencies.

In Datia assembly constituency, Rajendra Bharti has been selected to replace Avadesh Nayak as the Congress candidate. Bharti, a former MLA, had previously defeated the BJP’s Home Minister Narottam Mishra in an earlier election but narrowly lost in the last poll. The decision to replace Nayak was influenced by opposition from certain party members and leaders.

The Pichhore assembly seat will now see Arvind Singh Lodhi representing the Congress instead of Shailendra Singh. Narmada Prasad Prajapati has been chosen as the party nominee in the Gotegaon-SC assembly constituency, replacing Shekhar Chaudhary. Meanwhile, Ravinder Singh Tomar will contest from the Dimani assembly seat against Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar.

One of the crucial contests will be in the Gwalior assembly seat, which is considered a stronghold of Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia. The Congress has nominated Sunil Sharma for this constituency, who had previously contested unsuccessfully in a bypoll against sitting MLA and Minister Pradhuman Singh Tomar, a known Scindia loyalist.

The 2018 assembly polls saw the Congress win 114 seats, while the BJP secured 109. However, the Congress government later collapsed when many MLAs, led by Jyotiraditya Scindia, switched to the BJP, with Scindia subsequently becoming a Union minister. The BJP regained power in March 2020, with Shivraj Singh Chouhan as the chief minister for another term, and currently holds 127 seats in the assembly.
