Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud declined to postpone the hearing on AAP leader Satyendar Jain’s bail plea in a money laundering case, scheduled before a bench headed by Justice Bela M Trivedi. Senior advocate Abhishek Singhvi, representing Jain, requested the bench comprising CJI and justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra to defer the proposed hearing by Justice Trivedi’s bench for the day.

Singhvi highlighted that substantial arguments were previously heard by a bench featuring Justice AS Bopanna alongside Justice Trivedi, and now the matter is listed before a bench without Justice Bopanna.

“We wish to seek a deferment. If you (the CJI) can kindly see the case papers once,” Singhvi requested.

However, the CJI clarified, “I will not control what the judge concerned is doing in the matter listed before her. The judge who has the case will decide. I cannot. I cannot take a call.”

Satyendar Jain, seeking bail in the case, is presently on interim bail due to health reasons. Initially granted interim bail on medical grounds for six weeks on May 26 by the top court, it has been extended subsequently.

The matter is scheduled for Thursday’s hearing before a bench consisting of Justice Trivedi and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma.
