Cabinet Approves Establishment of Semiconductor Units in India
Key Points:
- The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the establishment of three semiconductor units in India.
- The units will be located in Dholera, Gujarat, Morigaon, Assam, and Sanand, Gujarat.
- Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) will set up a semiconductor fab in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 91,000 crore.
- Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (“TSAT”) will establish a semiconductor unit in Morigaon, Assam, with an investment of Rs 27,000 crore.
- CG Power, in partnership with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand, will set up a semiconductor unit in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of Rs 7,600 crore.
- The units will produce chips for various applications, including automotive, electric vehicles, consumer electronics, telecom, and more.
- These semiconductor units are expected to generate direct employment for 20,000 advanced technology jobs and around 60,000 indirect jobs.
- The establishment of these units aims to accelerate employment creation in downstream industries such as automotive, electronics manufacturing, telecom manufacturing, and other semiconductor-consuming industries.
- The total outlay for the Program for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India, initiated in December 2021, is Rs 76,000 crore.
- The move is seen as a strategic step to establish a semiconductor ecosystem in India, fostering capabilities in chip fabrication and indigenously developing advanced packaging technologies.
