Bridge Section Collapse in Gujarat’s Surendranagar Leaves 4 Injured, Police Report.
Ignoring Warnings: A 40-ton Dumper Attempts to Cross Aged Bridge
In a harrowing incident that unfolded on a Sunday evening, a section of an aging bridge spanning the Bhogavo river in Gujarat’s Surendranagar district gave way, resulting in injuries to at least four individuals. The incident occurred when a massive 40-ton dumper attempted to traverse the bridge on a panchayat road near Wadhwan city. Despite clear restrictions on heavy vehicle entry, the dumper proceeded with its perilous journey, causing a catastrophic structural failure.
Surendranagar Collector KC Sampat reported, “A dumper and two motorcycles were on the bridge when its first slab suddenly collapsed, leaving four individuals with minor injuries.” The repercussions of this calamity were felt as both the heavy vehicle and the motorcycles plummeted into the Bhogavo river.
Aging Infrastructure: The Four-Decade-Old Bridge
This bridge, which has served as a vital link for nearly four decades, had been under the jurisdiction of the state Road and Buildings Department. To mitigate potential dangers, a prominent warning board had been conspicuously displayed, and barricades had been erected to deter the movement of heavy vehicles. Despite these precautionary measures, the ill-fated dumper recklessly attempted to cross, resulting in the catastrophic collapse of the bridge’s first slab.

Hope for the Future: A Request for a New Bridge
As the community grapples with the consequences of this bridge collapse, it is imperative to recognize the pressing need for infrastructural upgrades. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the imperative to prioritize public safety and invest in modern, secure infrastructure.
In summary, the collapse of this decades-old bridge in Surendranagar highlights the dire need for infrastructure revitalization. The incident underscores the importance of adhering to safety guidelines and restrictions, especially when dealing with aging infrastructure. As the community seeks to recover from this incident, the hope for a safer, more robust bridge looms on the horizon, with a formal request for its construction already in motion. Let this incident be a catalyst for positive change, prioritizing the safety and well-being of all residents.
