Breaking Bilateral Boundaries: ISAMRA and PPL UK’s Royalty Collaboration
The Indian Singers’ and Musicians’ Rights Association (ISAMRA), formerly known as ISRA, has recently inked a groundbreaking Bilateral Agreement with PPL UK. This agreement is set to revolutionize the royalty landscape by facilitating the collection of royalties on behalf of performers in both India and the UK.
Under this historic collaboration, PPL UK, an organization licensing the use of recorded music for public performance and broadcast in the UK, will now collect royalties on behalf of ISAMRA’s performer members in the UK. Simultaneously, ISAMRA’s members are poised to receive royalties from PPL UK for the use of their recorded music in the UK.
Cross-Continental Royalties: ISAMRA and PPL UK in Full Swing
In 2023, PPL UK allocated revenue to over 450 performers as a result of this bilateral agreement. This number is anticipated to witness substantial growth in the current year, signifying the profound impact of this collaboration on performers on both sides of the globe.
The collaboration builds upon the 2023 agreement between ISAMRA and the Indian Music Industry (IMI), representing over 200 record labels in India. This earlier agreement dictates that ISAMRA receives a percentage of public performance revenue from sound recordings collected by PPL India.
ISAMRA’s Evolution: A Name Change Paving the Way
ISAMRA’s recent name change underscores its expanded role, now representing and disbursing royalties to both musicians and vocalists. This shift, endorsed by the Indian Government, has been instrumental in sealing the deal with PPL UK to collect royalties on behalf of UK performers for the use of their performances in recorded music within India.
Sanjay Tandon, Co-Founder and CEO of ISAMRA, expressed his enthusiasm for the Bilateral Agreement, emphasizing its significance in advancing performers’ rights globally. He envisions a strengthened partnership between ISAMRA and PPL UK, promising a new collaborative journey with PPL India to enhance revenue for performers from both nations.
Laurence Oxenbury, Director of International at PPL UK, hailed the partnership as a pivotal moment for performers’ rights in India. The agreement ensures that performers represented by PPL UK will receive new royalties for the use of their music in India throughout 2024, marking another milestone in the global recognition and compensation of artists.
