Brady Applauds the End of Largest Manufacturer of Ghost Guns-Polymer80
As the use of untraceable ghost guns has surged in recent years, the shutdown of Polymer80 marks a significant victory for gun safety advocates
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 13, 2024 — Brady, the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention group, applauds the closure of Polymer80, the nation’s largest manufacturer of ghost guns. The news comes on the heels of a series of successful lawsuits against Polymer80 filed by gun safety advocates, including Brady’s successful representation of the City of Baltimore in their lawsuit, which was settled in February of this year for $1.2 million and injunctive relief.
The untraceable nature of ghost guns, and the parts and kits used to build them, creates a dangerous loophole for individuals prohibited from possessing firearms and often hinders law enforcement’s efforts to solve gun crimes.
Senior Litigation Counsel Philip Bangle said:
“Ghost guns are as easy to put together as a Lego set and have become the weapon of choice for prohibited purchasers, including domestic abusers, gun traffickers, and youth. Untraceable, unserialized, and unregulated, the proliferation of these weapons in our communities poses an unacceptable risk to public safety and undermines existing gun laws across the country.
“The end of Polymer80 is a significant setback for the gun lobby and its efforts to circumvent firearm regulations. It also sends a clear message to the gun industry that if they act negligently and break the law, they will be held accountable. However, this victory is just the beginning. The legal fate of all ghost gun manufacturers will be a central issue when the Supreme Court hears oral arguments in Garland vs. VanDerStok next month.”
