Ahead of the Arunachal Pradesh assembly polls, scheduled concurrently with the Lok Sabha elections this year, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its lineup of 60 candidates. Among them is Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who will contest from his native constituency, Mukto, a reserved seat for Scheduled Tribes (ST). Mukto is one of the three constituencies situated in the Tawang district.
The party’s candidate list largely maintains incumbent MLAs, featuring a roster of familiar names including Tsering Lhamu, Phurpa Tsering, Kumsi Sidisow, and others. These candidates represent various constituencies spanning the state, showcasing the party’s confidence in its existing leadership and grassroots support.

The upcoming assembly polls in Arunachal Pradesh coincide with the Lok Sabha elections, slated for April-May. In the previous 2019 state assembly polls, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a dominant victory, claiming 57 out of the 60 legislative assembly seats. This historical performance reflects the enduring popularity and political influence of the BJP and its allies in the region.

Simultaneously, the BJP has unveiled its initial list of 195 candidates for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This list includes prominent figures such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, among others. Notably, 34 candidates are current ministers from both central and state governments, underscoring the party’s emphasis on experience and leadership continuity.
The inclusion of two former chief ministers in the candidate lineup further illustrates the BJP’s broad-based coalition and its ability to attract seasoned political veterans. With a resounding victory in the 2019 general elections, where the NDA secured a commanding 303 seats, the BJP aims to maintain its electoral momentum and consolidate its position as the dominant political force in India.
