Banihal Hits Record 23.4°C as Dry Spell Grips Jammu and Kashmir; Foggy Areas See Sub-Zero Temperatures
As an extended dry spell persists in Jammu and Kashmir, leading to an elevation in daytime temperatures, Banihal broke its all-time record with a high of 23.4°C recorded on the previous day. The local weather department reported that years marked by prolonged dry spells in the past (2018, 2016, 2015) exhibited similar patterns of maximum temperatures.
The meteorological official stated, “Due to prolonged dry spells, many stations recorded maximum temperatures 6-8°C above normal, with Banihal reaching the highest at 23.4°C on January 11th (surpassing the previous all-time record of 22.6°C on January 18, 2003).”
Conversely, areas enveloped in dense fog experienced temperatures 9 to 10°C below normal, with Jammu, Samba, and Kathua recording maximum temperatures of 8.6, 8.8, and 8.9°C on January 11.
The official highlighted the recurrence of similar temperature trends during dry spells in the years 2018, 2016, and 2015.
The dry weather is anticipated to persist until January 20, with weak western disturbances expected on January 12th and 17th evenings. The official forecasted, “Under the influence of these disturbances, generally cloudy weather with light snow over isolated higher reaches is expected,” adding that the period from January 18th to 20th is likely to be generally dry.
Improvement in visibility and a reduction in dense fog are expected on January 13 in Jammu, followed by the redevelopment of cold day conditions from January 13 to 16.
Meanwhile, freezing conditions persist in Srinagar, with a low of minus 4.0°C recorded on Thursday. The meteorological official noted that Srinagar’s minimum temperature of minus 5.0°C on the previous night was 1.9°C below normal for this time of the year.
Other regions in Kashmir reported varying temperatures, with Qazigund, Pahalgam, Kokernag, Kupwara, and Gulmarg all experiencing temperatures either above or below normal.
Jammu recorded a minimum temperature of 3.7°C, below normal by 3.3°C for the winter capital of J&K, while Banihal recorded a low of minus 0.4°C, Batote 4.5°C, and Bhaderwah 1.3°C.
The Kashmir valley is currently in the midst of ‘Chillai-Kalan,’ the 40-day harsh winter period, scheduled to end on January 30. This is succeeded by ‘Chillai-Khurd,’ a 20-day period from January 30 to February 19, and ‘Chillai-Bachha’ (baby cold), a 10-day stretch from February 20 to March 1.
