Australia beat Pakistan by One Wicket, Sets Up U19 World Cup Final Clash Against India
In a gripping semifinal match, Australia secured a nail-biting one-wicket victory over a resilient Pakistan, propelled by Tom Straker’s remarkable six-wicket performance and Harry Dixon’s composed fifty. The win earned Australia a spot in the ICC Under-19 World Cup final against defending champions India, scheduled at the same venue on Sunday.
Pakistan struggled to set a challenging target, posting a below-par score of 179, with Arafat Minhas (52) and Azan Awais (52) being the main contributors, despite facing a tough challenge from pacer Tom Straker, who finished with impressive figures of 6/24.
Facing their own challenges against spirited Pakistani bowlers, Australia managed to reach 181 for 9 in 49.1 overs. Dixon (50, 75b, 5×4) and Oliver Peake (49, 75b, 3×4) led the chase, securing Australia’s sixth appearance in an U-19 World Cup final.
The final, set against India, promises to be a thrilling encounter. India, playing their ninth title match, has a record five titles, while Australia, appearing in their sixth final, has three titles to their name. Australia’s last triumph was in 2010 against Pakistan in New Zealand.
Despite a challenging start, with openers Dixon and Sam Konstas losing four wickets in quick succession, Australia showcased their resilience. The middle-order, focused on accumulating runs through strategic shots, kept Australia in contention. Dixon and Peake’s partnership of 43 runs for the fifth wicket played a crucial role, although Minhas ended Dixon’s innings with a well-spun delivery.
Peake and Tom Campbell further guided Australia with a 44-run partnership, but a brilliant delivery from Arafat dismissed Campbell. Pakistan’s 15-year-old pacer, Ali Raza, then made a significant impact, claiming crucial wickets to reduce Australia to 164 for nine. However, Raf MacMillan (19 not out) and Callum Vidler (3 not out) held their nerve, securing the win in the final over.
In contrast, Pakistan’s batting effort was shaky, losing early wickets as Australia’s pacers maintained pressure. Straker, Beardman, and Vidler troubled the Pakistani batters, limiting them to 27 runs in the initial 10 overs. Pakistan’s only substantial partnership was a 54-run stand between Awais and Minhas for the sixth wicket. However, Straker’s return to the attack disrupted their momentum, and his precise bowling dismantled the lower-order, ensuring a challenging target for Australia.
