Auction of Aung San Suu Kyi’s House in Myanmar Sets Starting Bids at $90 Million
A court in Myanmar, currently under military rule, has announced the auction of the lakeside villa where Aung San Suu Kyi, the democracy icon, spent 15 years under house arrest. The court set the starting bids at 315 billion kyats ($90 million). Aung San Suu Kyi, detained since the military coup in 2021, has been in a legal dispute with her brother over the villa’s ownership. The auction, ordered by the court, is scheduled for March 20 at the house on Yangon’s Inya Lake.
Decades-Long Legal Dispute and Iconic Site
Aung San Suu Kyi, a Nobel laureate, faced a legal battle with her brother, Aung San Oo, since 2000, over ownership of the property registered under their mother’s name, Khin Kyi. The court ruled that the siblings must share proceeds from the villa’s sale. The house, an iconic site for Suu Kyi’s speeches and meetings, held historic gatherings with world leaders like Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Suu Kyi’s detention, following the military overthrow, has drawn international calls for her release.
Auction Details and Uncertain Future
The court-ordered auction will determine the villa’s fate, and starting bids at $90 million indicate its significant value. The source with knowledge of the proceedings noted uncertainty regarding a buyer, emphasizing that if one comes forward, the house will be sold. Aung San Suu Kyi, facing multiple convictions, remains in detention with an unknown whereabouts, and her brother has not commented on the recent developments.
