Key Highlights:
1. Muslim population in Assam growing at 30% per decade, projected to be the majority by 2041.
2. Hindu population growth at 16% per decade.
3. Government measures to curb Muslim population growth and Congress’s role in population control.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Muslim population in Assam is increasing at a rate of approximately 30 percent every decade.
He projected that Muslims are set to become the majority population in the state by 2041.Speaking at a press briefing, Sarma shared data indicating that Muslims currently make up 40 percent of Assam’s population.
“By 2041, Assam is expected to have a Muslim-majority population. This is a reality that cannot be thwarted,” he emphasized. The chief minister also noted that the Hindu community’s population is growing by about 16 percent every ten years.
He highlighted various measures his government has implemented to curb the population growth among Muslims, suggesting that these efforts are crucial for the state’s demographic balance.
Sarma criticized the Congress party, asserting that it plays a significant role in controlling the population growth of Muslims.
He suggested that if Rahul Gandhi, a prominent leader of the Congress party, became a vocal advocate for population control, the Muslim community might respond positively to such measures.
These statements reflect ongoing concerns about demographic changes and their implications for Assam’s social and political landscape.
The chief minister’s remarks are likely to spark further debate on population dynamics and communal relations in the region.
