Assam Government’s Proactive Measures for Education and Development
In a recent cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam government has taken significant steps toward the protection of tribal interests and overall development in the state.
Empowering Tribal Languages in Education: Implementation of NEP Provisions
The Assam government has decided to introduce six tribal languages as mediums of instruction in the foundational stage of school education. Languages such as Rabba, Karbi, Tiwa, Deori, and Dimasa will be introduced initially, emphasizing the preservation of tribal cultures. The move aligns with the provisions of the National Education Policy, 2020, showcasing the government’s commitment to inclusive and diverse education.
Recognition of Manipuri: Associate Official Language in Four Districts
The cabinet approved the Assam Official Language (Amendment) Bill, 2024, recognizing Manipuri as an Associate Official Language in four districts – Cachar, Karimganj, Hailakandi, and Hojai. This decision acknowledges linguistic diversity and aims to ensure inclusivity in communication within these districts.
A significant development involves the establishment of the Assam Veterinary and Fishery University, formed through the bifurcation of the faculty of Veterinary Science, Assam Agriculture University, Khanapara, and the College of Fisheries Science, Raha. This step is expected to enhance focus and specialization in veterinary and fishery education.

To promote women self-help group (SHG) members as urban women entrepreneurs, the cabinet approved guidelines for the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan–Nogoria. The initiative includes providing entrepreneurship funds, capital subsidies, and interest subvention to support women in establishing and sustaining their enterprises.
Infrastructure Development and Land Rights Protection
The cabinet sanctioned Rs 274 crore for infrastructure projects under the Assam Infrastructure Financing Authority (AIFA). Additionally, measures were taken to protect land rights, including the inclusion of Ahom, Koch, Rajbongshi, and Gorkha communities in the list of protected classes of persons in Balipara Tribal Belt.
These decisions reflect the government’s comprehensive approach towards education, linguistic diversity, women empowerment, and infrastructure development in Assam.
