Assam CM Vows to Eliminate Child Marriages in Assam
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma asserted his commitment to eradicating child marriages in the state during his assembly address. Pledging to prevent child marriages as long as he is alive, Sarma challenged political opponents, vowing to end this practice before 2026. The announcement followed the approval of the Assam Repealing Ordinance, 2024, which repeals the British-era Marriage and Divorce Act specific to Muslims. Sarma emphasized that repealing this act would provide relief to Muslim women, putting an end to their “torture and exploitation” and contributing to the fight against child marriages.

Child Marriages in Assam: Repealing British-Era Act for Progressive Change
The State Cabinet’s approval of the Assam Repealing Ordinance aims to bring about progressive change by repealing the outdated Assam Muslim Marriages and Divorces Registration Act 1935. Sarma highlighted the positive impact on Muslim women’s lives and emphasized that the act’s repeal would contribute to curbing child marriages.
Child Marriages in Assam: Assurance of Ongoing Efforts Against Child Marriage
Assuring continued efforts to combat child marriage, Sarma stated that another drive would be launched after the Lok Sabha election. He shared the government’s commitment to addressing the issue effectively and announced plans to end child marriages in Assam before 2026. While the move has faced criticism from some quarters, Sarma emphasized the need for reforms to protect the rights and well-being of women, signaling a commitment to social progress and gender equality.
