Arjuna Award 2023 Honors Mohammed Shami, Sheetal Devi, and Other Outstanding Athletes
In a prestigious ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhawan, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the Arjuna Award upon outstanding athletes for their remarkable performances in the field of sports over the past four years. Among the distinguished awardees were cricket star Mohammed Shami, accomplished archers Ojas Pravin Deotale, Sheetal Devi, and Aditi Gopichand Swami, along with wrestler Antim Panghal.
The Arjuna Award, India’s second-highest sporting honor, recognizes athletes not only for their athletic achievements but also for demonstrating leadership qualities, sportsmanship, and a strong sense of discipline.
A total of 17 athletes were honored for their exceptional contributions in 2023, with notable mention of cricket maestro Mohammed Shami. Shami, the leading wicket-taker in the previous year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in India, secured 24 wickets and set several records.
Expressing his joy on receiving the prestigious accolade, Shami stated, “This award is a dream; life passes, and people are not able to win this award. I am happy that I have been nominated for this award.”
The list of awardees also included para-archer Sheetal Devi, Aditi Swami, steeplechaser Parul Chaudhary, shooter Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar, and U20 World Champion wrestler Antim Panghal.
Sheetal Devi’s remarkable achievements in the Para Asian Games, where she clinched three medals, including a women’s team silver, a mixed team gold, and gold in the women’s singles compound open event, were highlighted. Sheetal’s outstanding performance in the women’s singles event, defeating Singapore’s Alim Nur Syahidah, was described as closely contested, with Sheetal emerging victorious with an overall score of 144-142.
The article also detailed the success of Indian archers, with Ojas Pravin winning two gold medals and Jyothi Surekha securing three medals overall. Ojas triumphed in the men’s compound archery final against Abhishek Verma and also secured a gold medal in the mixed team compound archery event alongside Jyothi Surekha.
