AR Rahman Shares Mental Health Journey, Attributes Mother’s Wisdom to Overcoming Suicidal Thoughts
In a recent conversation with the students of the Oxford Union debating society, renowned musician AR Rahman opened up about his journey through spirituality and mental health, shedding light on a time in his youth when he grappled with suicidal thoughts. Rahman candidly shared that it was the wisdom imparted by his late mother, Kareema Begum, that served as a guiding light during those challenging moments.
Reflecting on his past struggles, Rahman revealed, “When I had suicidal thoughts when I was young, my mother used to say, ‘When you live for others, you won’t get these thoughts.’ That’s one of the most beautiful pieces of advice I got from my mother.” The artist emphasized the profound impact these words had on him and highlighted the importance of living for others, a principle he learned from his mother during difficult times.
Having shared a deep bond with his mother until her passing in 2020, Rahman expounded on his philosophical perspective. “When you live for others, and you’re not selfish, there’s a meaning to your life,” he stated. Taking this principle seriously, he discussed various ways of contributing to the well-being of others, such as composing music, writing, and performing small acts of kindness like providing food to those in need or simply offering a smile.
Rahman acknowledged the uncertainties of life and the limited knowledge about the future. However, he expressed optimism about the potential for extraordinary experiences that may await each individual. “If you have all these things, and hope, that’s what keeps me going,” he shared. Rahman also acknowledged the occasional feeling of having done it all and being trapped in a repetitive cycle but stressed the realization that there might be a more significant role waiting to be fulfilled.
When questioned about his relatively limited discussions on spirituality, Rahman explained, “We all have dark times. One thing is definite; it’s a small little travel in this world. We were born, and we’re going to go. It’s not a permanent place for us. Where we’re going to go, we don’t know. (It depends) on each person’s own imagination and beliefs.”
Closing the conversation, Rahman touched upon his recent musical endeavors, including his composition for the film “Pippa” starring Ishaan Khatter and Mrunal Thakur. He also teased upcoming projects like “Ayalaan,” “Lal Salaam,” “Maidaan,” “Chamkila,” “D50,” “The Goat Life,” “Thug Life,” and more, showcasing his continued dedication to the world of music and cinema.
