Apple Enhances iPhone 14 and 15 User Safety with Extended Free Emergency SOS via Satellite
Apple’s innovative Emergency SOS via satellite feature, introduced in November 2022 for iPhone 14 users, has been a game-changer in emergency communication. Designed to connect users to emergency services when out of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, this feature has proven life-saving in numerous instances. Recognizing its importance, Apple has now extended the free trial of this service, initially offered for two years, by an additional year, enhancing the safety net for iPhone users.
Eligibility and Global Availability
Kaiann Drance, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, announced the extension of the free trial, highlighting the company’s commitment to user safety. iPhone 14 users who have activated their device in a supported country before 12am PT on November 15, 2023, are eligible for this extended offer. The feature, initially available in the US and Canada, has since expanded to several other countries, including Australia, the UK, and most of Europe, but is yet to reach India.
Beyond Emergency Services: Find My App and Roadside Assistance
In addition to emergency services, iPhone 14 users can utilize the Find My app to communicate their location via satellite when off-grid. This added functionality furthers the device’s utility in remote locations. Apple also introduced Roadside Assistance via satellite in the US for iPhone 15 and 14 series users, connecting them to AAA roadside assistance in no-coverage areas. This service, requiring iOS 17, is also included in the two-year free trial.
Expanding to iPhone 15 and Future Plans
The Emergency SOS via satellite service is not just for iPhone 14 users but also extends to iPhone 15 users across 16 countries and regions. Apple’s ongoing expansion of this feature, including recent additions like Spain and Switzerland, underscores its commitment to enhancing user safety and connectivity in remote areas.
