Anurag Kashyap Hails Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s “12th Fail” as 2023’s Best Mainstream Film
Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has recently commended Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s film “12th Fail,” joining a chorus of praise for the compelling narrative. In an extensive note, Anurag reminisced about meeting IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, the real-life inspiration behind the film, expressing his inability to envision the gripping tale that unfolds on screen. The lead role in the film is portrayed by actor Vikrant Massey.
Anurag lauded “12th Fail” as a groundbreaking achievement by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, recognizing himself as one of the many filmmakers who might feel a bit adrift in comparison. He crowned it as the best mainstream film of 2023 and shared a promotional poster of Vikrant’s film on his Facebook page.
In his endorsement, Anurag wrote, “Probably the best mainstream film I’ve seen in 2023. @vidhuvinodchoprafilms, at the age of 71, has crafted a masterpiece out of a simple story of an adamant man aspiring for more than life offers him.” He marveled at the film’s departure from conventional mainstream cinema, specifically praising its use of simple long shots in various scenes.
Anurag went on to enumerate the aspects of the film that impressed him the most, emphasizing the cinematography. Without divulging too much detail to avoid spoilers, he highlighted the authenticity of crowd scenes in Mukherji Nagar, describing them as if the camera was an unobtrusive observer capturing the unfolding narrative.
Expressing admiration for the sparse background score, Anurag emphasized the filmmaker’s trust in the storytelling and the actors, noting the absence of manipulative techniques often employed in mainstream cinema. He concluded his accolades by acknowledging the new benchmark set by Vidhu Vinod Chopra for filmmakers like himself who may have been feeling a bit lost creatively.
Reflecting on his past encounter with IPS officer Manoj Kumar Sharma, Anurag recalled meeting him and reading his book but confessed he could never have envisioned the story as VVC portrayed it. Urging viewers to watch the film on HotStar, he labeled it a must-watch and conveyed regret at not being able to see it in cinemas but emphasized the film’s significance.
“12th Fail” narrates the true story of Manoj Kumar Sharma’s journey from poverty to becoming an IPS officer. The film also sheds light on his challenging moments, with a focus on his supportive IRS officer wife, Shraddha Joshi, who stood by him throughout his struggles.
