Akhtar Warns of Dangerous Film Trends Amid ‘Animal’ Controversy
In a veiled critique of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film “Animal,” esteemed lyricist and writer Javed Akhtar has voiced his concern over the perilous trend of commercial success for films featuring problematic scenes. The 78-year-old expressed these apprehensions about the current cinematic landscape during the Ajanta Ellora International Film Festival in Aurangabad earlier this week, refraining from explicitly mentioning “Animal.”
Akhtar emphasized the pivotal moment for contemporary filmmakers, urging them to consider the societal reception of the characters they bring to life. He highlighted the potential danger when a film glorifying objectionable actions, such as a man demanding a woman to lick his shoe or endorsing violence against women, achieves blockbuster status. Akhtar’s remarks seemingly alluded to a controversial scene in “Animal,” where the protagonist, Rannvijay (Ranbir Kapoor), instructs his mistress, Zoya (Triptii Dimri), to lick his shoes as a demonstration of her love.
Despite “Animal” raking in nearly ₹900 crore globally, the film has faced criticism for its perceived misogyny and excessive violence. Akhtar asserted that the responsibility now lies with the audience to determine which films they embrace or reject.
Expressing his views on the challenges faced by writers in depicting a hero on screen, Akhtar acknowledged the complexities arising from societal uncertainties. He noted that creating compelling characters becomes challenging when societal norms are unclear. According to Akhtar, in simpler times, distinguishing between good and bad was more straightforward, with the rich often portrayed as villains and the poor as virtuous. However, in today’s complex landscape, where aspirations for wealth are prevalent, portraying the affluent negatively becomes challenging.
In conclusion, Akhtar underscored the audience’s crucial role in influencing the kind of movies produced and the values depicted on screen. He reflected on the evolving nature of societal perceptions and the impact it has on character representation in storytelling.
