Afghanistan’s Naveen-ul-Haq Faces 20-Month ILT20 Ban Over Contractual Dispute
Afghanistan’s cricket pacer, Naveen-ul-Haq, finds himself in hot water, facing a 20-month ban from the International League T20 (ILT20) due to a contractual breach with his team, the Sharjah Warriors. The discord emerged when Naveen declined to sign a retention notice for the ILT20’s second season, despite the Warriors offering him a contract extension based on his stellar performance in the previous season.
Efforts for mediation failed, leading the ILT20 to elevate the issue to its Disciplinary Committee, comprising CEO David White, Col. Azam overseeing Security and Anti-Corruption, and Zayed Abbas from the Emirates Cricket Board. Following a thorough investigation, the Committee decided to impose a 20-month ban on Naveen, extending until August 2025, prohibiting his participation in the next two ILT20 seasons due to breaching contractual obligations.
Expressing the significance of honoring contracts, David White emphasized the necessity of upholding contractual commitments in professional cricket.
This ban comes ahead of the ILT20’s second season set to commence on January 19, effectively sidelining Naveen, who recently retired from ODI cricket, from ILT20 participation until the ban’s conclusion. However, it does not preclude his involvement in other overseas cricket ventures.
The suspension deals a significant blow to the Sharjah Warriors, relying on Naveen’s prowess for the upcoming season. In the previous 2023 season, Naveen played nine matches for the Warriors, securing 11 wickets at an average of 24.36.
Despite this setback, Naveen’s career trajectory remains promising. His retention by the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) ahead of the IPL 2024 mini-auction attests to his sought-after talent in the cricketing sphere, hinting at continued opportunities despite the ILT20 ban.
