Afghanistan secured a place in the semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating Bangladesh by eight runs in the Super Eights match at the Arnos Vale Ground on Tuesday. The Afghan bowlers, led by Rashid Khan and Naveen-ul-Haq, successfully defended a target of 115 runs. The second innings of the match was reduced to 19 overs with a revised target of 114 due to rain.
With this defeat, Mitchell Marsh-led Australia was also eliminated from the tournament, finishing third in Group 1 of the Super Eights with just two points. Litton Das was the standout batter for Bangladesh with an unbeaten 54 runs from 49 balls, but the team struggled against Afghanistan’s bowling attack. Soumya Sarkar and Towhid Hridoy attempted to form partnerships with Das but were unable to sustain against the pressure.
Naveen-ul-Haq and Rashid Khan each took four wickets, while Fazalhaq Farooqi and Gulbadin Naib contributed with one wicket each. Naveen was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his excellent performance in defending Afghanistan’s target.
In the first innings, after opting to bat first, Afghanistan had a shaky start, despite a solid 59-run opening partnership between Rahmanullah Gurbaz (43 runs) and Ibrahim Zadran (18 runs). Rishad Hossain led Bangladesh’s bowling attack, taking three wickets for 26 runs. Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed each took one wicket.
Afghanistan finished their innings at 115/5, with Rashid Khan scoring an unbeaten 19 runs and Karim Janat contributing 7 runs. Bangladesh’s batting lineup struggled, ending their innings at 105 runs, with Litton Das’s efforts falling short.
