AAP MP Sanjay Singh Arrested by Enforcement Directorate in Money Laundering Case
In a significant setback for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Enforcement Directorate has apprehended Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh. This arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into a money laundering case connected to the Delhi liquor policy. The operation began with searches conducted at Singh’s Delhi residence early on Wednesday morning, marking the third major arrest within the party.
Previous Arrests within AAP
This recent development follows the arrest of Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain in May of last year on charges of money laundering through four companies allegedly linked to him. However, the most substantial blow to the party occurred in February of this year when Manish Sisodia, the then Delhi Deputy Chief Minister and a close aide of Arvind Kejriwal, was apprehended by the CBI in the alleged liquor policy scam.
Raids and Protests Surrounding Sanjay Singh’s Arrest
The raids on Sanjay Singh’s residence were initiated after businessman Dinesh Arora, an accused in the case who later turned ‘approver,’ named the AAP leader as having introduced him to Mr. Sisodia when he served as the excise minister. The search operations began early in the morning and lasted for several hours, during which AAP supporters gathered at Singh’s house to protest against the BJP and the perceived misuse of government agencies. Additional police personnel were deployed to prevent any escalation of the situation.
Sanjay Singh is scheduled to be taken to the Enforcement Directorate office, where his statement will be recorded, and he is expected to be produced in court on Thursday afternoon. The agency is likely to seek his custody for further investigation.
AAP Leaders Accuse BJP of Political Vendetta
During the raids, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal voiced his support for Sanjay Singh. He accused the BJP, without explicitly naming them, of making desperate attempts to undermine their political rivals ahead of the upcoming general election. Raghav Chadha, another AAP leader, echoed these sentiments and directly criticized the BJP for their prolonged investigation without finding any substantial evidence.
