PM Narendra Modi Slams Opposition Over Women’s Reservation Bill Defeat, Warns of ‘Consequences’
New Delhi, Apr 18 (VoM News): Prime Minister Narendra Modi has criticised opposition parties for not supporting the Women’s Reservation Bill, warning they will have to “face the consequences” for opposing a measure aimed at ensuring 33% reservation for women in Parliament.
His remarks came a day after the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha due to the absence of the required two-thirds majority.
The Bill secured 298 votes in favour but fell short of the 352 needed for passage, with 230 MPs voting against it following a prolonged and heated debate. According to sources, the Prime Minister told his cabinet that the opposition had “let down the women of the country” and emphasised that this message should be taken to the public.
The proposed legislation sought to reserve one-third of seats in Parliament for women, a long-pending reform aimed at enhancing female political representation.
The Bill’s defeat has sparked sharp political reactions, with the government accusing opposition parties of blocking a significant step toward gender inclusion, while opposition leaders have criticised the government’s handling and approach to the legislation.
The development highlights the continuing political divide over key constitutional reforms and the challenges in securing broad consensus for measures requiring special majority approval.
