Election Commission Imposes Ban on Exit Polls Ahead of State Elections
In preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections in five states, the Election Commission of India has issued a ban on the publication and publicizing of exit poll results. This prohibition will be in effect from November 7 at 7:00 am until November 30 at 6:30 pm. The decision to implement this ban is in accordance with the provisions of sub-Section (2) of the relevant legislation.
Exit Polls Defined
An exit poll is a survey conducted immediately after voters have cast their ballots for their preferred candidates. These polls play a crucial role in gauging the level of support for various political parties and their candidates.
The five states heading to the polls are Mizoram on November 7, Chhattisgarh on November 7 and November 17, Madhya Pradesh on November 17, Rajasthan on November 25, and Telangana on November 30. Vote counting is scheduled for December 3 in all of these states, with Chhattisgarh holding its elections in two phases.
The Model Code of Conduct has been enforced following the announcement of poll dates, highlighting the significance of these elections as they precede the Lok Sabha elections scheduled for April-May the following year. According to the Chief Election Commissioner, nearly 16 crore voters are eligible to participate in these elections, making them a critical political event for the nation.
