    The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Saturday portrayed that large amounts of money have been allocated and utilised for major repair works in schools across the Union Territory during the past two years and fresh allocations have been ascertained for utilising during the current financial year under the Samagra Shiksha Scheme.

    Responding to the question raised by Peerzada Feroze Ahmad which was unstarred, it was conveyed by the Minister in charge of the Department of School Education that Rs 372 major repair works had been taken up during the years 2023-24 and 2024-25.

    For these, Rs 1,258 lakh was approved out of which Rs 857 lakh was released and Rs 532 lakh have been spent so far.

    Breaking it down on a year-wise opposing he said, in 2023-24, a total of 263 works was executed with Rs 92 lakh sanctioned, Rs 672 lakh released and Rs 496.27 lakh utilised.

    In 2024-25, 109 works were taken up with Rs 336 lakh approved, Rs 185 lakh released and Rs 35.73 lakh spent.

    For the current financial year 2025-26, Rs 1,340 lakh has been granted for repairs in 322 schools. Of this Rs 533 lakh have already been released and simultaneously expenditure figures are yet to be reported.

    The works include whitewashing, painting, repair of cracks, damaged tiles, window panes and doors, installation of grills, restoration of roofs and trusses; measures directed to improve the overall condition of the school infrastructure.

    The government also brought out wider efforts made under the scheme to improve basic facilities in schools. These include constructing additional classrooms, boundary walls, separate toilets for boys and girls, provisioning head master rooms and availability of drinking water.

    It added that infrastructures like computer rooms, science laboratories, art and craft rooms, and libraries are being developed on the basis of enrolments and gaps diagnosed through UDISE data as part of continuous efforts towards development of a better learning environment across the state of Jammu and Kashmir.
