Ministry of Home Affairs Revokes Detention of Sonam Wangchuk After Six Months Under National Security Act

Ministry of Home Affairs Revokes Detention of Sonam Wangchuk After Six Months Under National Security Act

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has revoked the detention of Shri Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect, nearly six months after his arrest under the National Security Act (NSA).

Wangchuk was detained on September 26, 2025 following disturbances in Leh on 24 September 2025, with authorities citing the need to maintain public order. He had served almost half of the detention period under the NSA.

The Government said the decision follows sustained engagement with local stakeholders and community leaders in Ladakh, aimed at addressing the aspirations and concerns of the region’s people. Authorities noted that ongoing bandhs and protests had disrupted the local economy, affecting students, job aspirants, businesses, tourism operators, and the wider community.

In its statement, the MHA reaffirmed its commitment to fostering peace, stability, and mutual trust in Ladakh to enable constructive dialogue through mechanisms such as the High-Powered Committee and other appropriate platforms. The Government also reiterated its pledge to provide all necessary safeguards for the region.

The move is expected to ease tensions in Leh and support ongoing efforts to restore normalcy and strengthen community engagement in Ladakh.
