United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) Warns of ‘Significant Military Activity’ Around Strait of Hormuz

The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has issued a fresh advisory warning of “significant military activity” across key waterways in the Middle East, including the Strait of Hormuz.

In its latest update, the maritime security body said it is monitoring heightened activity in the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, North Arabian Sea and the Strait of Hormuz, describing the security environment as “highly volatile”.

According to UKMTO, ongoing regional military operations are adding to an already elevated threat level for commercial shipping.

Elevated Risks for Commercial Shipping

UKMTO cautioned mariners about the risk of miscalculation or misidentification amid the increased presence of military units and sensitive maritime infrastructure.

“There is significant military presence and activity across the region,” the advisory said, urging vessels to exercise extreme caution, particularly when operating near naval forces or strategic facilities.

The agency also addressed reports circulating about a possible closure of the Strait of Hormuz — a vital chokepoint for global oil shipments. It clarified that no official closure has been formally communicated to the maritime industry through recognised safety channels.

“Claims regarding the closure of the Strait of Hormuz continue to circulate via open source reporting and VHF communications,” UKMTO noted. However, it stressed that radio messages indicating transit restrictions do not amount to a legally recognised suspension of passage under international maritime law.

Tensions Extend Beyond Hormuz

Beyond Hormuz, UKMTO warned that threats remain elevated in other strategic waterways, including the Bab al-Mandab, another crucial maritime corridor linking the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

The advisory underscores growing concerns that escalating regional tensions could disrupt global shipping lanes, with commercial operators urged to remain vigilant and closely follow official guidance.
