Amid Health Concerns, Former Pakistan Cricketers Wasim, Waqar, Shoaib Rally Behind Imran Khan, Calls for Proper Medical Care

Several former stars of the Pakistan national cricket team have voiced concern over the deteriorating health of their former captain Imran Khan, who has reportedly lost 85% of vision in one eye while in prison.

Leading the appeals, legendary pacer Wasim Akram described the situation as heartbreaking and urged authorities to ensure the former skipper receives the best possible medical attention.

“It is heartbreaking to hear our skipper Imran Khan going through health issues. I sincerely hope the authorities take this seriously and ensure he receives the best possible medical care. Wishing him strength, a speedy recovery, and a full return to good health,” Akram wrote on X.

Echoing similar sentiments, former fast bowler Waqar Younis appealed for urgent treatment, setting politics aside. He recalled Khan’s immense contribution to Pakistan cricket and his role in founding the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital, which he said had helped countless families, including his own.

“Putting politics aside, our national hero who gave us our greatest glory on the sporting field, a cancer hospital that helped so many, including my own mother, is suffering a health emergency and requires urgent treatment,” Waqar said.

Former pacer Shoaib Akhtar also expressed deep sadness over the reports of vision loss, hoping Khan receives immediate and effective care. Other cricketers, including Shahid Afridi, Ramiz Raja and Mohammad Hafeez, stressed that access to basic medical treatment must be ensured.

Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja also urged the cricket fraternity to stand by their former captain during what he termed a difficult phase.

Supreme Court Orders Medical Examination

Khan, who famously led Pakistan to victory in the 1992 Cricket World Cup, has been in jail since August 2023. His supporters allege that his health has worsened due to neglect of medical complaints while in custody.

Amid mounting concern, the Supreme Court directed authorities to conduct a comprehensive medical examination by February 16, underlining the state’s responsibility to safeguard the health of prisoners.

Khan has received multiple prison sentences on various charges since his arrest, which he and his party maintain are politically motivated.

As the debate over his health intensifies, Pakistan’s cricket community appears united on one point — that their former captain, regardless of politics, deserves immediate and adequate medical care.
