Social and political organizations affiliated with the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) are actively preparing for a significant meeting with a high-powered committee from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA, reported The Tribune.

This gathering revolves around a comprehensive four-point agenda, with statehood being one of the most prominent points on the list.

Deliberations Amidst Election Hustle and Spiritual Visits

While the specific date of the meeting remains undisclosed, discussions regarding the composition of the delegation to engage with the MHA committee are already in progress. This scheduling delay is primarily due to the involvement of Kargil’s leaders in the recently conducted Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) elections, which momentarily postponed further negotiations.

The Four-Point Agenda: A Comprehensive Vision

The four-point agenda, as per The Tribune, encompasses vital demands, including the pursuit of statehood for Ladakh, seeking protection under the sixth schedule of the constitution, advocating for two Lok Sabha seats for both Leh and Kargil (currently only one exists), and highlighting the importance of job reservations for local residents.

Sajjad Kargili, a political activist and KDA member, expressed expectations that a delegation comprising ten Ladakh leaders would meet with the MHA committee, specifying that the delegation will consist of five leaders from Kargil and five from Leh. The delegation is likely to feature the Chief Executive Councillors (CEC) of the Leh and Kargil councils (LAHDC).

In a previous meeting held in June, six members, including former MP Thupstan Chhewang and former ministers from the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir, participated. Jigmat Paljor, a LAB member, revealed that the delegate list is in the process of being finalized for the upcoming meeting with the MHA panel, emphasizing that a joint meeting involving both KDA and LAB is planned to establish the approach for discussions with the MHA panel.

The delay in the meeting with the MHA panel is attributed to the Kargil polls and the visit of the Dalai Lama to Ladakh.
