China Urges Responsibility from Taiwanese Firms Amid Foxconn Probe: Investigation into Foxconn
In a recent development, China has initiated an investigation into Foxconn, a major Taiwanese tech giant, over alleged tax and land irregularities. Foxconn is renowned as one of the world’s largest contract producers of electronics and is a crucial supplier for Apple’s iPhones. While the investigation’s specific focus and the nature of Foxconn’s alleged offenses remain undisclosed, the probe has garnered significant attention.
Beijing’s Response and Call for Responsibility
On this matter, Beijing urged Taiwanese firms operating in China to demonstrate “responsibility.” The Taiwan Affairs Office of Beijing, responsible for managing relations with the self-governed island, referred to the investigation as “normal law enforcement behavior.” Zhu Fenglian, a spokeswoman for the office, emphasized that mainland authorities treat all enterprises equally and conduct compliance investigations in accordance with the laws and regulations.
However, Zhu also highlighted the need for Taiwanese companies operating in mainland China to shoulder social responsibility and actively contribute to the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations. This statement underscores China’s expectations that businesses, while benefiting from their operations in the mainland, should also engage positively in regional dynamics and political stability.
Taiwan’s Concerns and Caution
Taiwanese Vice President Lai Ching-te expressed concerns over potential pressures faced by Taiwanese companies in China. He warned that if Taiwanese firms feel unjustly pressured or lose trust in China, they may consider relocating their operations to other countries. Lai called upon China to value and support Taiwanese businesses and refrain from exerting undue pressure, particularly during election periods when they may be asked to express allegiance or support specific candidates.
The investigation into Foxconn and the subsequent responses highlight the complex dynamics between Taiwan and China, as well as the economic and political factors that influence the behavior of Taiwanese companies operating in the mainland.
