In a thrilling World Cup match against New Zealand, India’s opening batsman, Shubman Gill, achieved a remarkable milestone by becoming the fastest batter to reach 2,000 runs in One Day International (ODI) cricket. Gill accomplished this feat in just 38 innings, surpassing the previous record held by South African great Hashim Amla, who took 40 innings to achieve this milestone. Despite his young age of 24, Gill has already notched six centuries and ten half-centuries in his 37 ODI matches for India.

During the match against New Zealand, Gill was on the verge of making history, needing only 14 runs to reach this significant milestone. His moment of glory arrived in the seventh over of India’s run chase, where he emphatically dispatched a delivery from Trent Boult to the boundary. Although he couldn’t convert his promising start into a substantial score in the match, Shubman Gill’s rapid ascent in ODI cricket is indeed impressive, particularly in the ongoing year, where he currently leads the charts as the highest run-scorer with 1325 runs in 25 matches.

Gill’s journey in the 2023 World Cup faced an initial setback due to dengue fever, which forced him to miss India’s first two matches in the tournament. However, his remarkable comeback against Pakistan, where he scored 16 runs, showcased his resilience and determination.

In the same match, India’s star bowler, Mohammed Shami, etched his name in World Cup history by becoming the first Indian to secure two five-wicket hauls in the tournament. Shami’s incredible performance, ending with figures of 5/54 against New Zealand, was even more noteworthy as it was his first match in the ongoing World Cup after sitting on the bench for four successive matches. Moreover, Shami surpassed the legendary Anil Kumble to become India’s third-highest wicket-taker in ODI World Cups.

Thanks to Shami’s prolific performance, India successfully bowled out New Zealand for 273 runs, despite the Kiwis’ strong batting efforts, with Daryl Mitchell scoring a century (131) and Rachin Ravindra contributing a fighting knock of 75 runs.
