| Standing for Peace Across Borders, Rooted in Shared Humanity Washington, D.C. | May 7, 2025 Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR) calls on the Indian and Pakistani governments to de-escalate tensions and strengthen diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety and peace of all Indians, Pakistanis, and Kashmiris. HfHR calls on the Indian government to uphold the human rights of Kashmiris. We stand ready to work with other civil society, faith-based, and human rights organizations to build interfaith solidarity and global attention for a more peaceful, freer Kashmir. We mourn the escalating violence in Kashmir following India’s military strikes in Pakistan-administered territory, known as “Operation Sindhoor,” and retaliatory military action by Pakistan’s military. The Indian Government claimed that these strikes were carried out in retaliation for the horrific April 22 attack in Pahalgam, where 26 Hindu pilgrims were killed, but no armed group in Kashmir or Pakistan has yet claimed responsibility for this tragedy. Both the attack in Pahalgam and the military escalation are tragedies that remind us, as Hindus, that we cannot meet violence with violence. These values demand that we not only mourn the loss of life, but also refuse to allow grief to harden into vengeance. A sustainable path forward must center civilian protection, uphold human dignity, and break the logic of tit-for-tat escalation. We are gravely concerned for the lives of Indians, Pakistanis, and Kashmiris caught in the crossfire of two nuclear-armed states thirsting for war. We call on the Indian and Pakistan governments to exercise maximum restraint and to prioritize transparency and accountability, particularly in ensuring that civilian lives are not further endangered. A durable peace in Kashmir cannot be secured through force, but must emerge from dialogue—no matter how difficult—and from ensuring that Kashmiris’ fundamental human rights, including the right to self-determination, are respected. Also Read: Global Nuclear Fusion Project The Indian Government must stop its brutal crackdown in Kashmir, including mass arrests, the bulldozing of homes, bomb blasts in residential areas, and extrajudicial killings of Kashmiris. India must guarantee that the Kashmir of the future includes the end of military rule, the restoration of Kashmir’s statehood, and a pathway to self-determination. It is a test of leadership—on both sides of the border—to place humanity over nationalism, and principle over provocation. The people of Kashmir—across religious and national lines—deserve peace, dignity, and the chance to shape their futures. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti — peace in the heavens, peace on earth, peace within. |
