Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has taken a significant step in addressing a serious complaint within the Parliament, as he referred BJP MP Nishikant Dubey’s “bribe-for-query” allegation against Trinamool Congress member Mahua Moitra to the Ethics Committee of the lower House. The complaint centers around Dubey’s accusations that Moitra accepted “bribes” from a businessman in exchange for asking questions in Parliament, thus violating ethical standards. In response, Dubey had urged Speaker Birla to establish an “inquiry committee” to investigate these charges against Moitra. In return, Moitra has responded by stating that she “welcomes any move against her after the Lok Sabha Speaker is finished dealing with pending charges against him (Dubey).”

Ethics Committee Takes Charge

The Ethics Committee of the Lok Sabha, chaired by BJP member Vinod Kumar Sonkar, will now take up the task of delving into the allegations made against Mahua Moitra. This move emphasizes the importance of maintaining ethical standards and ensuring accountability within the Indian Parliament.

The Allegations and Evidence

Dubey has based his accusations on evidence he received from an advocate, which he describes as “irrefutable.” This evidence supposedly shows a connection between Mahua Moitra and a businessman, raising questions about the integrity of her parliamentary inquiries. Dubey also noted that a significant portion of Moitra’s recent questions in Lok Sabha were related to the Adani Group, a business conglomerate that she has frequently accused of malpractices.
