28 Killed in Shoe Factory Fire in Eastern China
Beijing, July 09, 2026 [VoM News]: According to state media, at least 28 people have been killed after a huge fire engulfed a shoe manufacturing factory in eastern China’s Fujian province on Thursday. The 12:00PM fire engulfed the factory of Huiteng Shoes at the city of Jinjiang.
Firefighters fought thick acrid smoke and flames for hours as rescue teams searched the multi-storey building for survivors. Authorities said several people were initially trapped inside, and higher floors were difficult to access because stairwells and exits were blocked by shoe material and other factory supplies.

Firefighters were assisted by the deployment of 183 rescue personnel and 35 emergency vehicles. The authorities explained that the fire was worsened by the adhesives and raw materials used by the footwear industry.
Chinese President Xi Jinping commented that ‘This is a tragedy that has caused great casualties’ and called for an urgent investigation into the cause of the tragedy. He ordered relevant departments to strengthen the rescue work, provide proper treatment to the injured and hold accountable the guilty party if the tragedy was caused by neglect.
The fire is one of the worst industrial accidents in China this year. China has experienced a series of serious work accidents in the past few months, and the government has repeatedly called for tighter implementation of fire and industrial safety regulations. The government is investigating the cause of the fire.
