Hour-Long Roadblocks on Mumbai-Pune Expressway for Gantry Installation
Traffic Disruptions on Mumbai-Pune Expressway for Highway Management System Upgrade
The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is initiating a series of one-hour roadblocks on the bustling Mumbai-Pune Expressway this month, beginning today. These roadblocks, lasting from 12 noon to 1 pm, are due to the installation of gantries as part of the Highway Management System along various points of the 95-km-long expressway.
Upgrading Infrastructure for Improved Management
The MSRDC explained in a press release that the installation of gantries is essential to enhance the management of the expressway. These hour-long roadblocks are scheduled to take place from October 17 to 19 and on October 26, impacting both Pune and Mumbai-bound lanes at key locations, including Lonavala, Khandala Tunnel, Dasturi Police post, Dheku village, and Khandala Exit.
Scheduled Roadblocks and Their Impact
On October 17, the roadblocks will be in effect at Khandala Tunnel and Lonavala for the Pune-bound corridor. Subsequent days will primarily affect the Mumbai-bound lanes. It is important to note that traffic in both directions will resume at 1 pm after the conclusion of each roadblock.
Historical Significance of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway
The Mumbai-Pune Expressway is renowned for being India’s first access-controlled highway. Fully operationalized in 2002, the 6-lane expressway includes five toll plazas, with Khalapur and Talegaon serving as primary locations for toll collection. These intermittent roadblocks are part of the ongoing efforts to enhance the highway’s management system and infrastructure.
