Cricket to Make Olympic Return in 2028: US Ambassador Eric Garcetti Enthusiastic About Inclusion
US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti recently discussed the format of cricket in the 2028 Olympics, expressing confidence that the United States will participate in the event. This exciting development marks cricket’s return to the Olympic stage after a hiatus of 128 years, as confirmed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Monday.
Cricket’s Olympic Comeback
While speaking with ANI, Ambassador Garcetti shared his insights on the format of cricket in the upcoming Olympics. He revealed that the cricket competition is expected to feature 6-8 teams, with the United States being a part of this cricketing extravaganza.
Celebrating Diversity in Sports
Ambassador Garcetti also highlighted the inclusion of baseball, another popular sport in the United States, in the list of Olympic events. He expressed his enthusiasm for this decision and emphasized the importance of loving both cricket and baseball, rather than choosing between them. He described this as a “Hollywood story” and emphasized the global growth of American football, highlighting its presence in Europe and Asia. He also praised lacrosse as an engaging and dynamic game and expressed his love for baseball and softball. Ambassador Garcetti encouraged the idea that one can embrace both cricket and baseball, emphasizing the diversity of sports on display in the Olympics.
Promoting Peace Through Sports
In light of ongoing global conflicts, including the Russia-Ukraine and Israel-Hamas situations, Ambassador Garcetti emphasized the traditional concept of the Olympic truce. He noted that in ancient times, people would set aside their weapons to come together through sports. While acknowledging that conflicts continue today, he encouraged the world to unite through sports and embrace the values of peace and participation.
Ambassador Garcetti took to social media to express his excitement about cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics, recognizing the significance of this moment in sports diplomacy. He extended his appreciation to key individuals, including Nita Ambani, Mithali Raj, Casey Wasserman, Jay Shah, and other esteemed guests who joined him in celebrating the love of sports. The inclusion of cricket in the Olympics is seen as a reflection of the diversity and athleticism shared by both India and the United States.
