    Today, November 19, Gyalmo Deskit Wangmo, known as the Queen of Ladakh, was cremated with state honors at Stok Palace, Leh. At the age of 90, her passing marks a great loss for the people of Ladakh, as she was a champion for the region’s development and cultural preservation.     A Glimpse into Her Journey

    Born on May 1, 1934, in Himachal Pradesh, Gyalmo Deskit Wangmo began her married life with the King of Ladakh, Kunzang Namgyal. In 1977, she made history as the first and only woman elected to represent Ladakh in Parliament, serving from 1977 to 1980. She also founded NIRLAC, an organization dedicated to preserving Ladakh’s rich cultural heritage. In 1958, she became the convener of the Welfare Extension Project, working tirelessly for social upliftment in the region.

    Her passing is seen as the end of an era, but her legacy will continue to inspire future generations of Ladakh.
