After Assembly Elections, Now JK to Hold Urban and Panchayat Elections Likely by Year-End: Media Reports

After the successful conduct of the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections, media reports suggest that urban and panchayat elections are likely to be held in Jammu and Kashmir soon.

A Delhi-based media outlet, quoting officials, states that the security forces deployed for the previous Assembly elections will remain in place for the conduct of the upcoming polls.

As the term of municipal corporations in Jammu and Srinagar ended last November, conducting the elections is necessary to restore local governance.

As per media reports, “the security forces deployed for the Amarnath Yatra, Lok Sabha elections, and Assembly elections will remain in place, which itself reflects that the central government is preparing to conduct urban and panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.”

After the abrogation of Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir has not had a complete democratic setup. The Jammu and Kashmir State Election Commission will oversee the conduct of panchayat polls rather than the Election Commission of India.

The panchayat polls are likely to be held after a fresh delimitation exercise of ‘Halqas’ (Revenue Villages), according to officials.
