Researchers Develop High-Energy Solid-State Battery with New Method
Key Highlights:
- Battery offers 1,070 Wh/L energy density, exceeding current lithium-ion technologies.
- Adaptable manufacturing process can integrate with existing lithium-ion production lines.
- Cost-effective solution, targeting less than €150 per kWh, boosts commercial viability.
Researchers in Europe have developed a groundbreaking solid-state battery with a significantly increased energy density of 1,070 Wh/L, a notable improvement over today’s lithium-ion batteries (800 Wh/L). The prototype, created by the SOLiDIFY consortium with 14 European partners, was developed in the advanced battery lab of EnergyVille in Genk, Belgium.
The battery utilizes a high-energy-density NMC (nickel, manganese, and cobalt) cathode and a lithium-metal anode, separated by a thin solid electrolyte layer. This new approach allows manufacturing at room temperature and can be integrated into existing lithium-ion battery production lines. The solid-state electrolyte, developed by Solvionic, utilizes a polymerized nanocomposite that transitions from liquid to solid, facilitating thin-layer application and increased volumetric energy density.
The new battery technology not only improves energy density but also enhances safety by reducing flammability. With potential applications in electromobility, this advancement represents a step toward commercially viable solid-state lithium-metal batteries, offering cost-effective solutions at less than €150 per kWh.
