25 Candidates Withdraw from First Phase of Assembly Elections

As the deadline for withdrawing candidatures for the first phase of the assembly elections ends, 25 candidates have stepped out of the race, narrowing the field to 219 candidates contesting across 24 constituencies. The withdrawals include more than a dozen independent candidates, reshaping the competition.
In Anantnag district, Sheikh Muzafar Ahmad, an independent candidate, withdrew from the Anantnag-West constituency. The Dooru constituency also saw two independent candidates, Mohd Hussain Pader and Shahid Hussain Bhat, step aside. Pulwama district witnessed the exit of independent candidate Mohammad Ayub Band from the Tral constituency.
In Kishtwar district, three independent candidates—Sajjad Ahmed, Mohd Aslam Dev, and Sanjay Kumar—have withdrawn from the Kishtwar constituency, reducing the candidate list to seven.
The Padder-Nagseni constituency saw Bahujan Samaj Party’s Arshad Muthier withdraw, while Irshad Ahmad, Farooq Ahmad Keen, and DPAP’s Fatima Begum have exited the Inderwal constituency.
Doda district also experienced significant withdrawals. Syed Aasim Hashmi opted out of the Doda-West constituency, and in the Bhaderwah constituency, independents Varinder Kumar Razdan, Anil Kumar, Bhoori Singh, and Amil Kumar, alongside DPAP’s Mohammad Aslam Goni, have pulled out.
Additionally, independent candidates Gurukesh Gupta and Urfi Majid Wani, the latter a covering candidate for DPAP, withdrew from the Doda constituency.
Ramban district’s two constituencies, Ramban and Banihal, saw further withdrawals. Chhankar Singh, Suresh Kumar, Bhadur Singh of J&K National Panthers Party, and DPAP’s Girdhari Bhau exited the Ramban race, while independent Gulzar Ahmad and DPAP’s Asif Ahmad Khanday withdrew from Banihal.
Finally, in Kulgam’s Devsar constituency, independent candidate Rameez Ahmad Dar has withdrawn his nomination. The first phase of the elections will now proceed with 219 candidates.
