In Pakistan, two separate bus accidents on Sunday led to the tragic deaths of at least 40 people, including 11 Shia Muslim pilgrims, with several others sustaining injuries. The first accident occurred on the Makran Coastal Highway in Balochistan province, roughly 100 kilometers from Karachi.
A bus carrying around 70 pilgrims returning from Iraq through Iran overturned and plunged into a ditch, resulting in 11 fatalities and 35 injuries.
The bus, which was transporting pilgrims from Iran to Punjab, lost control near Buzzi Top due to overspeeding. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lasbela Capt. Naveed Alam reported that rescue operations were ongoing, with four passengers still trapped in the wreckage.
In a separate incident just hours later, a coaster bus carrying 30 passengers fell into a ditch near the Girari Bridge in Muzaffarabad, resulting in 29 deaths. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle due to brake failure.
Rescue teams confirmed that 23 men, five women, and one child were among the deceased, with some bodies requiring extraction from the wreckage by cutting the bus.
Authorities, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and President Asif Ali Zardari, expressed deep sorrow and extended their condolences to the victims’ families.
In response to these tragic events, Iran and Pakistan’s Gwadar district have imposed a travel ban on pilgrim movements from Iran’s Gabad to Gwadar for safety reasons.
Gwadar Deputy Commissioner Hamoodur Rehman advised that pilgrims avoid travel during this time, citing the need for increased caution.
