A 42-year-old woman doctor from Maharashtra’s Thane district was defrauded of more than Rs 30 lakh after being tricked into purchasing cryptocurrency, according to police officials.
The incident, which occurred between August 2 and August 6, was reported to the Manpada police station in Kalyan by the victim, a resident of Khoni in Dombivli.
The scam began when the doctor received a phone call from an individual who claimed that a parcel allegedly sent by her to Thailand on July 24 contained suspicious items.
The caller falsely informed her that the parcel included three passports, three SIM cards, and MD drugs, raising concerns about potential legal consequences.
To further deceive her, the scammer instructed the doctor to download a mobile application, which they claimed would assist in resolving the issue.
Under the pretext of clearing her name and avoiding trouble, the victim was coerced into purchasing cryptocurrency worth Rs 30,86,535.
Following the caller’s instructions, she transferred the substantial amount of money to various bank accounts.
Realizing she had been duped, the doctor reported the incident to the authorities. The Manpada police have launched an investigation into the matter, aiming to track down those responsible for the elaborate scam.
As cases of online fraud and cybercrimes continue to rise, the police are urging citizens to remain cautious and vigilant against such schemes.
The investigation into this case is ongoing, and further details are awaited.
