An accountability court has approved a seven-day remand for former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the newly filed Toshakhana case, according to Geo News. The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) had initially sought a 14-day remand, but the court denied this request and set the next hearing for July 29.
The couple was presented before the court following the expiration of their previous eight-day remand, accompanied by a progress report from the anti-corruption body. Imran Khan, aged 71, who led Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been in Adiala Jail since August 2023 on multiple charges, including the Toshakhana case, the cypher case, and the un-Islamic marriage case. Bushra Bibi has also been incarcerated for several months.
Recently, the court suspended Imran Khan’s sentence in the Toshakhana case, while other courts overturned his convictions in the cypher and iddat cases. However, his release prospects were further complicated by new charges related to the May 9, 2023, riots following his arrest from the Islamabad High Court premises. These violent clashes saw army installations, including the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore, attacked by PTI workers, with Khan being named the main accused in all related cases.
On July 20, the opposition alliance Tehreek Tahafuz Aaeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) announced nationwide protests on July 26, demanding the release of political prisoners, including Imran Khan. The TTAP called for the establishment of a judicial commission to investigate the firing on peaceful marchers in Bannu and demanded fresh elections and the ruling party’s resignation. The alliance, led by Mahmood Khan Achakzai, also included senior PTI leaders and other political figures.
