Rising Temperatures Trigger Heat Waves Across Jammu Kashmir

After a brief respite of cooler temperatures, Jammu and Kashmir are facing rising mercury levels once again. Qazigund and Kokernag in south Kashmir are experiencing heat waves, with maximum temperatures soaring to 33.4 degrees Celsius and 33.0 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Srinagar, the summer capital, recorded a high of 34.4 degrees Celsius, which is 4.3 degrees above the normal temperature and just 0.2 degrees below the official heat wave threshold.
Other regions in Kashmir have also seen significant temperature increases. In Pahalgam, the temperature reached 29.9 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara saw a high of 34.6 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg, a well-known ski resort, recorded a maximum of 24.5 degrees Celsius.
In the Jammu division, temperatures have similarly risen. Jammu city recorded a maximum temperature of 37.4 degrees Celsius.
Banihal reached 32.0 degrees Celsius, and Batote, Katra, and Bhaderwah recorded maximum temperatures of 29.3 degrees Celsius, 33.5 degrees Celsius, and 34.2 degrees Celsius, respectively.
The region is currently under a heat wave warning, with conditions expected to persist for the next 72 hours.
However, there is a forecast for short spells of rain in some areas of Kashmir and many parts of the Jammu division on July 23 and 24, which may bring temporary relief.
Residents are advised to take precautions against the heat, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours. The authorities are monitoring the situation and will provide updates as necessary.
