Nepal’s Government Faces Upheaval as CPN-UML Ministers Resign

Eight ministers from the CPN-UML in Nepal’s government, led by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, are set to resign following a recent overhaul in the ruling alliance. Mahesh Bartaula, Chief Whip of CPN-UML (Communist Party of Nepal- Unified Marxist Leninist), confirmed that all eight ministers will tender their resignations. Bartaula also hinted that Prime Minister Dahal might step down soon, with a new government expected by evening.

Ahead of these resignations, CPN-UML called a party secretariat meeting to discuss the political developments. Similarly, the CPN-Maoist Center, led by Dahal, is holding talks to decide whether Dahal should resign or face a vote of confidence in parliament.

The Rastriya Swatantra Party and the Nepali Congress are also holding meetings to discuss the political shift and the allocation of ministries. The government change, coming less than 100 days after its formation on March 4, follows a midnight agreement between CPN-UML leader KP Sharma Oli and Nepali Congress leader Sher Bahadur Deuba.

Under the new agreement, Oli will lead the government for one and a half years, followed by Deuba for the remaining term until the next election. The parties have also agreed on the division of ministries and formed a committee to suggest amendments to election procedures and the constitution.

The agreement includes a constitutional amendment that would make the Vice President the chairman of the National Assembly. Leaders from the Congress and UML met with President Ram Chandra Paudel to inform him of the new coalition and the potential activation of Section 76 (2) to form a new government if Dahal fails to secure a vote of confidence.

Prime Minister Dahal, who came to power in December 2022 by aligning with the CPN-UML, has faced several political challenges, including securing votes of confidence multiple times. The recent developments mark another significant shift in Nepal’s political landscape.
