Karnataka MLC Polls: Congress Wins 5 of 7 Seats; 11 MLAs Cross-Vote | BJP seeking Action
BENGALURU, June 19, 2026 [VoM News]: The Congress party has secured a decisive victory in the Karnataka Legislative Council elections, winning five of the seven seats while the BJP managed to win two seats.
The JD(S) failed to secure a seat despite support from its alliance partner BJP.
However, there are reports of significant cross-voting which influenced the outcome within the BJP-JD(S) alliance. As the Congress had the numbers to comfortably win four seats, succeeded in securing a fifth seat with support from legislators outside its expected tally.

But surprisingly, a twist came when the JD(S) candidate having the support of NDA alliance received only 14 votes, though having the support of party’s legislators as well as support from BJP MLAs under the alliance arrangement. It hinted out that several legislators did not follow the official party line.
Ahead of the retirement of seven MLCs on June 30, the elections were conducted. These leaders include Naseer Ahmed, Tippannappa and B.K. Hariprasad, BJP leaders N. Nagaraju (MTB), Prathap Simha Nayak and Sunil Vallyapur, and JD(S) leader Govindaraju.
Now, the Congress had increased its strength in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 34 to 39 members. The BJP now has 29 members, while the JD(S) holds six seats. One Independent member is also part of the House.
Karnataka BJP president B.Y. Vijayendra confirmed thw reports of cross-voting from both BJP and JD(S) legislators and said the party would investigate the matter.
“Preliminary information suggests that there was cross-voting from both sides. Appropriate action will be taken after a detailed review,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Congress leaders described the results as a reflection of growing support for the party and dissatisfaction within the BJP-JD(S) alliance.
