NHRC Chairperson Emphasizes the Need for Violence-Free Elections and Human Rights
Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra, the chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), stressed the importance of violence-free elections to ensure citizens can exercise their fundamental democratic rights. Speaking at an event marking the 30th anniversary of the NHRC, he stated that violence adversely affects free and fair polls and called on the state to take measures to guarantee such elections.
Justice Mishra also made an appeal for providing Aadhaar cards to marginalized groups such as beggars, transgenders, sex workers, orphans, and trafficked minors in a “mission mode.” He highlighted that the Constitution guarantees a range of fundamental rights that reflect the principles of the right to life with equality, justice, freedom, and dignity, which are at the core of human rights.
The NHRC, as an institution, aims to provide support to those who have none and promote justice for all. Justice Mishra stressed that equality cannot be achieved without an independent and impartial judiciary, emphasizing the importance of the separation of powers as outlined in Article 50 of the Indian Constitution.
He also expressed concern about the declining standards of media debates and their impact on the younger generation, urging all concerned parties to ensure that the imprint left on the younger generation is one of civil discourse and dialogue. Justice Mishra stated that corruption compromises the fundamental dignity of individuals and impedes development. He called for united efforts to eradicate corruption, describing it as unacceptable in any civilized society.
