Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, while addressing a rally in the tribal-dominated Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh ahead of the November 17 assembly elections, unveiled a series of pledges. She reiterated her commitment to conducting a caste census, emphasizing the need to address the underrepresentation of Other Backward Classes (OBCs) and tribals in government jobs. She referenced Bihar’s caste census, which revealed significant OBC, Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST) populations but inadequate job opportunities, and called for a nationwide census to rectify this disparity.

Education and Allowance Promises

Vadra’s promises also included the implementation of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS) for government employees. She announced the ‘Padho-Padhao’ (learn and teach) scheme, which would provide free education from Classes 1 to 12. Additionally, students in Classes 1 to 8 would receive a monthly allowance of Rs 500, while those in Classes 9 and 10 would get Rs 1,000 per month, and students in Classes 11 and 12 would receive Rs 1,500 per month.

Empowering Tribals and Critiquing the BJP

Vadra expressed concern over tribals collecting tendu leaves for a living receiving shoes instead of bonuses. She questioned the appropriateness of this gesture and suggested it might reflect a lack of respect for their labor. Vadra also criticized the BJP for its rule in Madhya Pradesh, accusing the party of remembering the people and making promises during elections while neglecting them in the preceding 18 years. She cited numerous corruption scandals, including those related to Vyapam examinations, the mid-day meal scheme, and scholarships, as evidence of the BJP’s misrule.

Looking to the Future

Vadra acknowledged her resemblance to her grandmother, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, and recognized her responsibility towards the tribal population. She urged the people to hold her accountable for delivering on her promises. The Congress leader also highlighted other election commitments, such as providing gas cylinders for Rs 500, offering a monthly allowance of Rs 1,500 to women, waiving loans, providing free electricity for agricultural pumps up to 5 HP, and offering 100 units of free electricity per connection, with an additional 200 units at half price.
